Alfredo Amato and Miles Jennings unexpected win in race 2 at the Mediterranean Grand Prix in Terracina on Sunday ended Italy’s 16-year wait for an Italian team to win a major title. Few would have had Amato and Jennings down as potential race winners, even fewer would have had them as championship winners. But they have done both in just three Grand Prix outings together. Their third place in race 1 and a fourth in the Turkish Grand Prix in June plus the win and another fourth in Terracina leapfrogged them to the top of the European standings on 50 points to claim the title, ahead of Victory and Zabo-Isiklar. The last Italian team to win the European title was Ferretti in 1997, but without an Italian in the boat, Norberto Ferretti and Luca Ferrari winning it for them in 1995. In front of a home crowd the pressure for success was squarely on the shoulders of Team owner-driver Luca Formilli Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella, but their bid ended on lap 8 when a torque sensor let go. Step-up Jennings and Amato who from fourth at the start watched all three race favourites falter, hitting the front on the final lap to take the chequered flag. On a more sober note, the team has confirmed that it has lodged an appeal against the 25-second post-race penalty imposed on Victory in race 1 for going the wrong side of a demarcation mark on their long lap, believing the penalty should have been more severe.
