Transat New York Vendee May 28 Report #1 New York IMOCA "Speed Trials." Ready For Start May 29.24

The thrilling spectacle of the New York Vendée Globe Speed Trials unfolded on the upper reaches of New York Harbor as six sleek, state-of-the-art 60-ft IMOCAs battled against the unpredictable winds, vying for glory and speed records in the run-up to their historic transatlantic race.

Spectators, VIPs, friends, and family were treated to an awe-inspiring display as the wind gods only partially delivered. Puffs of breeze decided the fate of each craft as they raced northward against the backdrop of Lady Liberty, while intermittent north and south winds provided brief opportunities for a handful of boats to surge forward on their foils.

Romanias Taso Fortnet emerged victorious in the first heat, besting the competition with an impressive time of five minutes and 55 seconds. This extraordinary event, despite the sailors’ busy schedules repairing boats and fulfilling sponsorship obligations before the start of the upcoming transatlantic race, provided a unique moment for these accomplished ocean racers to celebrate their achievements.

Sailing Stars Gather in the Big Apple

The Speed Trials gathered the crème de la crème of offshore sailors in one place. The level of preparation for this formidable race is exceptionally high, according to team coach Lee Sweet, who commented on the high-performance ethos driving these elite ocean racers.

Next Generation American Sailing Talent Rises

Rising U.S. offshore sailing star and social media phenomenon Cole Brower teamed up with experienced sailor Boris Herrmann in a bid to elevate the profile of single-handed offshore racing in America.

A Fusion of French and American Cultures

The event showcased the shared passion for sailboat racing between France and the U.S., fostering a unique fusion of cultures through shared experiences. This camaraderie, combined with breathtaking displays of skill and teamwork, created unforgettable memories that lingered long after the trials concluded.

The Cultural Celebration on Governor’s Island

Historic Governor’s Island came alive with music, gastronomic delights, and thought-provoking discussions addressing issues of global importance. French chefs tantalized tastebuds with savory crepes while world-class musicians conducted students in a beautiful celebration that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of adventure.

Ready for New York Vendée Globe Start

Sailors, with heads down and focused on the details, eagerly prepared for the start of their momentous transatlantic journey. As they said goodbye to family and friends in the shadow of Lady Liberty, a sense of purpose and determination filled the air. Their ultimate goal – securing a coveted spot in November’s Vendée Globe – spurred them onwards as they braced themselves for 24 hours at sea.

International Regatta Brings High-Stakes Excitement

The intense competition between Le Havre and New York has left an indelible mark on the history of this iconic race. As one sailor remarked, “Being part of a legacy that spans several decades makes me appreciate just how special this race is.” This sentiment was echoed by every participant who crossed the finish line.

Celebrating Achievement and Endurance

The determination, endurance, and pursuit of excellence displayed during the Speed Trials were a testament to each sailor’s unwavering commitment to their sport. As they basked in their achievements, the public cheered them on in acknowledgment of their Herculean efforts.

Looking Forward to More Racing and Adventure

With the Speed Trials complete, focus shifted to future races, with Anatole Facon aiming for a triumphant finish in Class 40 competition. This marks only one step in an incredible journey that showcases not just individual glory but also the collective spirit of sailing.

Supporting International Partnerships and Legacy

The success of the Transat CIC has proven once again how vital offshore racing is to global economies and sports culture. This event will long be remembered for its exceptional achievements, fierce competition, and incredible camaraderie among participants.

A New Chapter in Offshore Racing History

The New York Vendée Globe Speed Trials represent a significant milestone in the rich history of transatlantic races. As the next generation takes up the mantle, one can only imagine what thrilling challenges and accomplishments lie ahead for this timeless sport.

The Transat CIC - solo ocean racing at its purest. It's a challenge punctuated by a succession of lows that sweep across the North Atlantic and generate headwinds, the great feature of this race. In the beginning, the record for the crossing was around 40 days. Today, the greatest solo specialists at the helm of the fastest boats can cover the same distance in just 8 days.
Between the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan, the skippers of the New
York Vendée-Les Sables d’Olonne competed in the Vendée Liberty, a
runs competition in New York Bay. Even if the intensity of
wind was light, the sailors offered breathtaking images.
Romain Attanasio (Fortinet) was the fastest (5 min 55
dry). At the same time, round tables and concerts took place at
Governors Island. A look back at a day that will remain engraved in the
spirits!
The hundreds of guests who were present at Governors Island this Friday,
will remember this day for a long time. Big blue sky, bright sun,
summer temperatures, statue of liberty and giant buildings: the decor of the
Vendée Liberty was set up and the show could begin. Some
not far from there, the IMOCAs set off for their run, sailing along Liberty Island
before finishing their time against Manhattan.
