As of June 24th, Nicolas Lunven is racing in the third position in the fleet during the New York Vendee Transat after his bowsprit on his Amoka-Bahrain.com Whisky PRB yacht broke. The accident occurred while he was still sailing to the United States and has impacted Lunven’s performance. Despite this setback, Lunven continues to compete.
The broken bowsprit on Lunven’s boat will affect his downwind speed for the remainder of the race. The leading competitors in the second edition of the New York Vendee Globe Transat are currently struggling with an elongated area of low pressure on their route. This has created difficult and inconsistent weather conditions, which the fleet must navigate using old-fashioned techniques.
The 28 sailors participating in this race have experienced squalls, shifting winds and periods of little to no wind. The unsettled conditions mean constant changes are necessary for each competitor, causing fatigue. While sailing in the North Atlantic, Lunven has found himself constantly needing to maneuver and trim sails to maintain an advantageous position.
In the video, Lunven remains hopeful that he will still have a chance to secure victory. While acknowledging the race is long and uncertain, Lunven believes that determination and teamwork will carry him through. Currently, Boris Herman and Charlie Dalin are ahead of Lunven.
The unpredictability of the sea has presented unexpected challenges during the race. Each competitor must adapt to constantly shifting weather patterns and find their way using traditional navigation techniques, rather than relying on accurate forecasting models.
The New York Vendee Transat has not been without its challenges. Sailors such as Nicolas Lunven continue to race despite difficult conditions, showcasing their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As each competitor battles against the odds, one thing remains clear – there is no room for complacency in this challenging yet thrilling global water adventure.
The New York Vendee Transat remains an unpredictable and exciting race, as each competitor must navigate the unforgiving elements and their own unique challenges to achieve victory. Nicolas Lunven, despite his broken bowsprit, will not give up easily, and his dedication could well see him rise through the rankings in a bid for glory.

While they were supposed to cross it yesterday at the end of the day, the leaders of the second edition of the New York Vondée only crossed the other side of the low pressure trough planted on their route last Sunday morning. This elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure has clearly given them a hard time, and it continues to do so, with the rest of the fleet. The models are always completely off the mark. In this context, sailors must resort to the basics. Navigate the old-fashioned way, with your eyes riveted towards the clouds, but also multiply the maneuvers, and remain fully concentrated on their settings. While it’s certainly not easy, it’s also not ideal for quickly gaining miles in the right direction. The proof is that as they finish their fourth day at sea, they have barely completed a third of the journey!
On the tracker, leading is Charlie Dalin, followed closely by Boris Herrmann and bough-sprit missing Nicolas Lunven.
