What is the race? An attempt by both teams to complete the fastest ever circumnavigation of the globe.
Who are the competitors?
Alan Priddy and his team from Great Britain vs Ralph Brown and his team from the USA.
How fast will they go?
It’s not a question of how fast they will go although both boats have a top speed of circa 50 mph. The race will be run on averages. The current World Record was set at an average speed of 16.8 knots (19 mph) so the teams are evenly matched.
How long is the race?
The two boats will be taking different routes around the world. The British team’s route is 23,850 nautical miles while the Americans haven’t declared their route yet.
How will they refuel?
The World Record Authorities stipulate that the boats have to fuel in recognised harbours. How many times each team refuels is their decision. The tactics are similar to those used by the teams in Formula One and are just as cloaked in secrecy.
Who are the crew?
The permanent crew are Alan Priddy, Jan Falkowski, Clive Tully, Shelley Jory-Leigh, Steve Mason, Pietro Giovannoli, Joe Mearns and Charles Stewart.
