Want to know what sailing is about? Plain and simple it’s about the wind. This is what sailing is all about. And in Cape Verde there is no shortage of wind. We sail from Sao Vicente island to the island of Santa Luzia. A uninhabited island and nature preserve. On the way there we sail in common Cape Verdean conditions. Strong winds and swell. I make a tactical error which makes for good sailing practice. We end up going upwind and tacking for several hours getting soaked and salty. In the end it’s all worth it. Until we are approached by pirates. What sailor’s fear most.
