Epoxy, Dirty Water, Goodbye Chart Table WHSE146

Emptying a freshwater tank on a sailboat can be a tricky task, especially when you’re lacking access to power tools or professional-grade equipment. In this episode of Wind Hippie Sailing, the crew shares their unconventional yet effective method for clearing out a 200L water tank with just a hand pump.

The Freshwater Tank Challenge

In the episode, it’s revealed that the freshwater pump broke months ago and spare parts never arrived. The next question became how to empty 200L of tank with only a hand pump. It was then when they realized there must be a cheaper method, even if it doesn’t involve using pretty shiny stainless things.

The Epoxy Project

Throughout the video, we witness multiple boat projects being completed. The team begins by filling in all the holes with a first coat of epoxy on the chart table project. They utilize painters tape to prevent the epoxy from pushing through into unwanted areas. After applying the initial layer of epoxy, they use 120grp to smooth out any bulges, which is just part of the process according to Wind Hippie Sailing.

Clean Water Tanks and Tools

In an effort to clean out their water tanks, Wind Hippie Sailing first attempted to create a siphon to help with draining them. However, they soon discovered that the forward tank needed more suction due to the air lock in the system. By creatively using a Sharpie marker as filler for the hose clamp, they were finally able to clear out both tanks.

Tool Time

While organizing and maintaining tools onboard, Dan worked on rust-busting them and determining which ones would be kept or discarded. By extending the hose that runs from the water bag to a locking system using a piece of hose from their freshwater rain catch, they were able to flush the tank through while doing dishes. This made it much easier for them to eventually clean out the tanks.

Enjoying Australian Hospitality

A significant part of the episode features Rich and Mel, locals from Townsville, who become good friends with Dan and Wind Hippie Sailing. Rich and Dan share a passion for cooking, which leads to a fantastic dinner filled with baked oysters, lamb shoulders, and other delicious treats.

Guns Galore

In the spirit of trying new activities, Rich offers Dan some American beers and shoots together. Wind Hippie Sailing proudly presents their Ruger 22 rifle, perfect for rabbit hunting or target shooting at a distance up to two hundred meters.
