Developing a natural spring in the dead of winter might seem a little counterintuitive but it’s actually a pretty straightforward and fun process because the warm spring water melts the snow, so it’s a lot easier to find a spring and also see exactly where the water is flowing. We are currently developing a little network of natural springs (8 so far) that will combine into the water system for our house and farming operations in the future. Now that we’ve had our first proper drought, I’m also going to separate the wet-weather springs from the springs that flowed during the drought. My goal is to use a ram pump to get the water uphill without electricity, which is why I’m focused now on getting a high enough flow rate to make that possible. Obviously one spring on its own would provide more than enough water for our family, but the ram pump requires a higher flow rate to work , hence the network of springs!

Big love,
