Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar: Did We Pick the Right Window?
Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar by sailboat is a milestone for many sailors—and now, it is our turn. After sailing from Al Hoceima to Ceuta putting us right at the entrance of the Straight, we chose a narrow weather window and motored across one of the world’s most infamous stretches of water. With orca sailboat attacks just a couple of days old and the unpredictable strong currents in the Straight of Gibraltar, we stayed alert and hoped we’d made the right call.
This sailboat crossing of the Gibraltar Strait took us from Spanish Ceuta to Tangier, Morocco—our gateway into the Atlantic and into a new cultural experience. We share how we timed our departure with the shifting currents, why we opted for no wind, and what it felt like to be sailing from Ceuta to Tangier with the knowledge of recent orca sailboat attacks in the area.
