At the 2018 Windsurfing World Championships in Praia da Rocha, Portimão Portugal, a new class tested the winds.
More than 30 windsurfers from 14 countries and 3 continents were registered for the first-ever Formula Foil World Championship. Formula Foil was showcased by some of the world’s best riders in an attempt to qualify the class for competition in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Unfortunately, variable winds didn’t allow for the multiple races required for Olympic approval of this competition.
The only race of the day was won by Gonzalo Costa Hoevel from Argentina. Nicolas Goyard and Tristan Algret, both of France, took second and third place.
“Portimão is scheduled to host the World Windsurf Championships again in 2019 and 2020.
