How I become a BETTER yacht chef

Yacht Chef Embarks on an Inspiring Culinary Journey

In the world of professional cooking, yacht chefs must be experts in their craft. They need to provide top-notch service while catering to a diverse range of palates. One chef takes us through his journey to improve his culinary skills and expand his horizons.

Stage at Michelin-Starred Restaurant

To start off, this talented chef embarks on a stage (internship) at the prestigious Frog by Adam Handling restaurant in London. A stage is where an aspiring or experienced chef works under the guidance of well-known chefs to learn their techniques and gain inspiration.

Insights Gained from Michelin-Star Experience

The chef spends five days working in various sections of the kitchen, learning from different chefs. The detailed attention to each dish was a key takeaway for him. It provided an excellent foundation for his skills and inspired him to achieve similar standards on board.

Chocolate Apprenticeship

While working on the yacht, this chef decided to improve his skills further. He invited friend and chocolatier Hannah over to teach him about making chocolates suitable for high-end yachting clients. Hannah runs her own course called Chocolatea.

The Chocolatea Course

Hannah’s course covers adaptable recipes that allow chefs to use their creativity while maintaining the integrity of the chocolate art. It teaches various methods, from melting and tempering to selecting the right molds.

Supplier Visits in Amsterdam

The chef also visited suppliers in Amsterdam during his leave. He joined a Chef’s tour that took him to various sources such as meat warehouses and a seaweed farm, offering a behind-the-scenes look at where ingredients come from.

The Benefits of Supplier Visits

Visiting these suppliers provided him with a deeper understanding of where the ingredients come from and inspired him to maintain high-quality service.

The Journey Continues

With new skills under his belt, the chef aims to bring innovative and high-quality dishes to his yacht guests. By staying connected with their suppliers, maintaining quality standards, and learning from experts like Hannah, this chef promises a delightful culinary experience for his guests.

To summarize, this yacht chef has demonstrated the importance of continuous learning in his role. By participating in different workshops, attending tours with fellow chefs, and gaining exposure to top-rated restaurants, he elevates his culinary expertise. He understands that enhancing his skills not only benefits him but also enriches the dining experience for guests on board.

The Chef’s Tour

If you’re interested in expanding your culinary skills and gaining inspiration from like-minded chefs, consider joining a Chef’s tour. These tours often take place in various locations worldwide, allowing participants to connect with their suppliers and fellow professionals.

The Power of Networking

Networking is key in the culinary world. Attending these tours and courses gives chefs an opportunity to build relationships with suppliers, fellow professionals, and gain new insights that can benefit their guests.

Final Thoughts

This yacht chef’s journey exemplifies the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and the power of networking in delivering exceptional culinary experiences on board. As more chefs embrace these values, we can expect to see an ever-improving standard of service across all luxury yachts.

Encouragement for Further Exploration

If this journey has sparked your curiosity, consider taking similar steps to enhance your own skills and culinary expertise. Remember that learning never stops, especially in the dynamic world of luxury yachting.

I might be at home on leave but that doesn't mean the cooking stops! This rotation I've been working hard to up skill for the busy Mediterranean charter season coming up.
