A brand-new catamaran builder is challenging the status quo with a design that looks more like a spaceship than a sailing yacht.
In this video, we travel to a factory near Cape Town in South Africa to see the very first hull of the radical new Onyx 10.5 catamaran. Built by a team determined to rethink what a small cruising catamaran can be, this bold design pushes boundaries both inside and out.
We meet the founders to hear the story behind the project and learn how they set out to break away from the conventions of established sailing yacht boat builders. From the striking exterior design to an interior that feels more like a stylish Italian café than a traditional cruising catamaran, the Onyx is clearly doing things differently.
But it’s not just about looks. The boat is packed with unusual ideas and clever engineering, including a single hydraulic engine system, hydraulic shock absorbers built into the hulls to reduce slamming, trampolines you can actually jump on and carbon-fibre chin-up bars for keeping fit at anchor.
