We had the thrill of going through this ship canal for the first time in our journey from Chesapeake City. The Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, at 14 miles long and 450 feet wide, is quite a marvel. Its construction was one of the most expensive projects worldwide in the early 19th century.

Perfect Pit Stop at Charming Chesapeake City

A highlight for us was the charming town of Chesapeake City. The town’s friendly vibe, complete with an ice cream shop and a cool local bar-restaurant-gift shop-coffee combination, makes it an ideal stopover. We spent some time in the old Town Hall that is now a candy shop. It is an experience you cannot miss, especially trying the chocolate covered potato chips.

Sailing down the Delaware Bay demands keen awareness of weather patterns and timing, as well as understanding currents. This is because you must align your trip with the right combination of wind conditions – south winds followed by north winds to get down the bay. Another interesting part of our trip was managing the lack of diesel availability at either Marina here. A bit of a challenge, but with some ingenuity and a scooter ride to get five gallons of diesel, we managed it well. Despite a little spill on Matt’s scooter, we persevered!
