What happens when a sailboat loses the anchor while underway? A Few Weeks back We Shared the Near Catastrophe in Dotham Cut where our engine died and we lost our secondary anchor. So what happened? Why did our Engine die? This quick video explains.
Dotham Cut is a channel in Exumas Bahamas that leads from the Exuma Bank to the Exuma Sound. In our incident, we lost engine power while in the middle of a rage. A rage is a potentially hazardous scenario when the wind and current are in opposition.
Crashing waves tore the anchor from our bow. After the anchor settled in the sand, the anchor rode became taut, and created a dangerous moment where we lost forward motion. The motor died when the propeller seized. At this point, the rode was already cut from the anchor.
This is the next lesson, we had our mainsail up. We always have it up. The mainsail allowed us to continue moving instead of losing steerage and drifting into the rocks. After we realized the motor would not restart, we unfurled the jib and safely sailed away.
Thankfully, the conditions were right for us to be able to sail out of this scenario. When an anchor is lost underway, many devastating situations can ensue. I feel like we were lucky in this situation. And sailed away with a few valuable lessons.
