Relaxation on the Open Seas: A Serene Skinny Dip in the Indian Ocean
After weeks at sea, exploring exotic Southeast Asian destinations and enjoying numerous anchorage spots across the region, The Cruising Kiwis found themselves at the crossroads of an exciting new adventure. The time had come to say goodbye to southeast Asia, not without some sadness for Rachel as she reflects on their extended stay in a location where she felt both excitement and restlessness towards leaving. Despite these feelings, there was no turning back from what laid ahead – 15 days sailing the Indian Ocean en route to the Maldives, presented by Offshore’s wind settings prediction. As seasoned adventurers, the Cruising Kiwis had already completed one of their longest passages with their boat under sail and were more than prepared for this new leg. Looking for a moment of relaxation in their long passage across open water, they couldn’t resist taking a quick skinny dip in the Indian Ocean – an activity that left them feeling truly ‘free’ as described by Rachel. Although her companions didn’t initially join her due to fears, it was undoubtedly an unforgettable experience. The sun was setting on calm seas during this refreshing interlude, symbolizing a beautiful and tranquil end to their first night at sea towards the Maldives. The day turned into a magical encounter when a Sri Lankan fishing boat came across their yacht, making a beeline for them. Although initially surprising as they found themselves wondering if the fishermen had hostile intentions (as The Cruising Kiwis were as far from land as possible in the Bay of Bengal), what unfolded was an unexpectedly heartwarming interaction. Exchanging goods such as water, food, and cigarettes for a small price in return – cashew nuts and pasta. The fisherman shared some unique ginger beverages from Sri Lanka which surprisingly tasted quite good. As the sun continued setting over another successful day at sea with these pleasant encounters, The Cruising Kiwis pressed onward toward their next destination: an experience that would forever be remembered as one of many beautiful moments shared on their journey through exotic waters.Tackling a Plumbing Leak Amidst the Sea
Despite these joyful encounters, life at sea has its challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining living quarters and keeping essential systems in check. One day, while The Cruising Kiwis were busy with their daily duties onboard, they discovered a sudden water leak that seeped into their bedroom area. Recognizing the need for immediate action, Robert stepped up with his natural ability of plumbing. Using waterproof epoxy glue-hardener, along with some creative tape solutions, he managed to seal the leak efficiently, giving the couple hope that this wouldn’t be the last challenge they’d face on their ocean adventure. Their quick-thinking teamwork demonstrated resilience and determination, proving once again why The Cruising Kiwis are an unstoppable duo on water. And thus began another day at sea as The Cruising Kiwis sailed closer to the Maldives, embracing both the challenges and serendipitous moments life has thrown their way.Nude Latitudes sailing the Indian Ocean to the Maldives
As we embark upon our longest bluewater sailing passage to date, 15 days across the Indian Ocean, we slip into the familiar rhythm of sailing life as a family on the briny, night shifts, sail changes and refreshing swims in the sea to wash off the heat of the day, while under way. All alone in this large expanse of water we can recharge the batteries and be at one with the water, skinny dipping our way to the Maldives. All alone that is until a mysterious boat on the horizon makes a bee line for us, are they friend or foe?

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz
