While cruising through the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives, The Cruising Kiwis came across more than just turquoise waters and sandy beaches. A quick tour outside revealed a grim sight – their boat had become a temporary home for an irritating swarm of flies.
The Maldives are a sailor’s dream, offering pristine waters and beautiful landscapes. But it seems that despite efforts to keep plastic waste at bay, it continues to make its way into the ocean and onto the shores of this paradise destination.
The Cruising Kiwis discovered a large number of flies that had somehow found their way into the boat, making it unbearable for them to stay. “There must be about 50 flies in here,” they commented, referring to the massive infestation they were dealing with.
Behind their boat was a rubbish dump on the island, which had been incorporated into the seawall. This disturbing fact brought to light how easily plastic waste can contaminate these once pristine environments.
Determined not to let the flies overrun their boat, The Cruising Kiwis took immediate action. They decided to sweep out the pests and clean up the mess they had left behind.
In a playful banter between them, they called out “get out of here” repeatedly as they tried to remove each fly one by one. The flies were really annoying, creating a bit of chaos inside their beloved vessel.
The Maldives is a popular tourist destination and its beautiful marine life has unfortunately become a victim of human carelessness. More needs to be done to educate both locals and tourists about the consequences of leaving behind plastic waste.
Whether sailing in the Maldives or enjoying a day at the beach, it’s essential to remember our responsibility towards the environment. Let The Cruising Kiwis’ experience serve as a reminder to be mindful of the impact that even the smallest piece of plastic waste can have on these fragile ecosystems.
If you’re passionate about sailing or simply enjoy spending time by the ocean, consider joining The Cruising Kiwis in their mission to reduce plastic waste. You too can make a difference and protect these magnificent places for future generations.
We anchored beside the islands rubbish dump. Our bad. This brought a plague of flies to our sailing boat which we tried to chase away without much success.
