Genoa Shredded – Tempestuous Day 4 Live Sailing from Maldives to Seychelles
The Cruising Kiwis, a renowned YouTube channel for all things sailing and water sports, is back with an incredible episode showcasing their live stream journey from the Maldives to Seychelles. The couple shares gripping moments of their tempestuous voyage during which they encounter fierce winds, a shredded Genoa sail, and treacherous sea conditions.
Joining them for part of their adventure is another Rob (there are two of them onboard!), who also discusses the state of the sea at the moment. With an exciting mix of camaraderie and challenging weather conditions, this episode promises to be one thrilling sail.
The video starts off in Ian’s kitchen where he is preparing a hearty breakfast for his crew. He then leads viewers outside as they prepare to document their journey live amidst stormy seas.
As the wind and rain pound on their vessel, The Cruising Kiwis share stories of the past few days including an epic tale that saw their Genoa sail destroyed in a fierce gust of wind overnight. Not deterred by this catastrophe, they continue sharing details about life onboard – from dolphin sightings to booby birds visiting them.
The crew explains how they’re coping with harsh conditions and shares details about their current course towards Seychelles. They also talk about the other boats accompanying them on this passage. One notable mention is a 68-foot catamaran that was said to have achieved impressive speeds during similar rough seas. Despite the difficult weather, The Cruising Kiwis manage to maintain high spirits and make the best of their adventure.
Another key point discussed in the episode involves challenges with the autopilot system on their boat, which has become unusually sensitive due to the rocky seas they’re navigating through. This, coupled with night-time sailing when visibility is virtually nonexistent, adds another layer of excitement to their journey.
In between all the action, viewers also catch a glimpse of how food preparation continues unabated even amidst these trying times at sea – they’ve set up a system where some of their wet clothes get rinsed while awaiting to dry under favorable conditions. Additionally, Mocha enjoys her barracuda caught during one point of the journey.
To protect themselves against relentless wind and noise disturbance from their live phone recording setup, Rob puts together an improvised wind guard. Throughout this entire ordeal, The Cruising Kiwis never lose sight of the beauty and joy found in each new day of sailing.
As they conclude this segment, they look forward to their next live stream episode which promises more adventure ahead.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz
