ARRIVAL IN MALDIVES LIVE – DAY 15 OF INDIAN OCEAN SAIL

In this episode of The Cruising Kiwis, Rachel and Rob, along with their feline first mate Moana, share their exciting arrival in the Maldives after a 14-day Indian Ocean odyssey. The couple, seasoned sailors, document their journey with engaging commentary and stunning visuals, offering viewers a glimpse into the realities and wonders of life at sea.

Paradise Found

As they approach the idyllic Igan Island, the breathtaking turquoise waters and pristine white sand beaches come into view. Rachel’s relief and excitement are palpable as she captures the scene on camera. Moana, however, remains unimpressed, yearning for the return of a stable internet connection to indulge in her cat video habit.

Navigating the Maldives

Rob, the captain, expertly maneuvers the boat through the crystal-clear waters, navigating around shallow reefs and submerged hazards. He shares his knowledge of the local geography, highlighting potential dangers and safe passages for fellow sailors. Rachel, acting as the videographer, films these close encounters with the reefs, providing viewers with a thrilling sense of being right there on the deck of the boat.

Sustainable Island Living

While filming from the interior due to strong winds, Rachel delves into some interesting facts about Igan Island. This eco-conscious island boasts a population of around 535 residents and is a pioneer in sustainable energy solutions. Igan Island’s claim to fame is its world-first hybrid AC coupled renewable energy micro-grid. This innovative system seamlessly combines wind turbines, solar panels, and battery banks to deliver 24-hour clean electricity to the island community.

Wind, Waves, and Debate

The serenity of the moment is momentarily interrupted by the strong winds buffeting the boat. This experience prompts a discussion between Rachel and Rob about their sailing strategy. Rachel expresses her frustration at the slow pace caused by limited engine use during the passage. They debate the merits of using the engine more frequently on future voyages to strike a balance between efficiency and speed.

A Tropical Paradise Awaits

The captivating turquoise waters surrounding the island are a constant source of wonder. Rachel highlights the vibrant colors and the inviting opportunity to take a refreshing swim in these pristine waters. The clear visibility allows viewers to peer into the depths, showcasing the Maldives’ rich marine life.

Customs and Island Time

As they prepare for their official arrival, Rachel and Rob explain the Maldives’ customs clearance process. Unlike other ports of entry, clearance here involves a designated agent and customs officials visiting the boat directly. Due to a technical issue with their VHF radio, Rachel and Rob had to make prior arrangements to ensure a smooth arrival process.

Engaging with the Audience

The Cruising Kiwis take a moment to acknowledge the positive feedback they’ve received on their daily live streams. While they appreciate the viewers’ enthusiasm, they express uncertainty about maintaining a daily schedule due to the demands of sailing and exploring new locations. They propose a possible shift to a weekly live stream format, allowing them to share more in-depth content.

Anchored and Ready to Explore

The episode concludes on a positive note as Rob successfully secures the boat in approximately 10 feet of clear water. The couple shares their plans to explore the island and indulge in a well-deserved swim in the inviting turquoise waters. They also reflect on their desire to incorporate more fresh fruits and milk into their future provisions.

Technical Gear and Details

While the specific brands and models are not mentioned in the video, Rachel and Rob’s yacht is equipped with wind generators, solar panels, and battery banks, showcasing their commitment to sustainable living aboard their vessel. The episode also features glimpses of their depth gauge, displaying a reading of 10 feet as they anchor near Igan Island.

It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #TheCruisingKiwis
