Get to know this 3.7-mile out-and-back trail near Julian, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 48 min to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are October through June. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.
This trail is challenging with some rocky or overgrown areas. Please be careful around the old abandoned mines. This trail passes through private property. When passing through private property easements and right-of-ways, it is especially important to stay on the path and respect posted guidance. Local officials and private landowners work in partnership to provide public access to this area. Staying on the path while on private property ensures that agreements between local officials and the landowner are upheld and that this trail remains open to the public in the future.
I recommend wearing pants and long sleeve shirts. It’s pretty overgrown with barbed plants along the way.
The mines are a lot of fun to adventure in, but of course, do so at your own risk. The Warlock mine was a working mine for almost 100 years, until a cave-in in 1965. The Gold Gem mine had too many broken timbers and just didn’t look safe to me, so I only went in about 50 feet. Both Melissa and I decided to not risk it and live another day. :-).
If you go, you will have a blast. Lots to discover and a fun hike regardless. Don’t forget the altitude. It’s about 4,500′ elevation.
Have a blast and leave a comment. We love to reply!

My wife, Melissa, and I had a great time filming a commercial in Joshua tree this weekend #camping
We love camping in Joshua Tree National Park because there is so much to see and do there. Lots of rocks to go spelunking into, due to the natural caves there.
Doing our daily hike yesterday I almost stepped on two camouflaged rattlesnakes. #Snake #snakes
Red diamond rattlesnakes are everywhere right now. Beware. My father just got bit by one a few days ago and it’s just being released from the hospital today. He is going to rehab for a little while. This is a big rattlesnake right here.
