Oil Change for 2018 Ford E-450 6.8L V10 Chassis with Forest River Sunseeker Class C RV
Save money and do it yourself! Changing the oil in your Ford 6.8L V10 Powered RV is almost as easy as changing your car oil. If you’ve never done it before then there’s no time like the present to start.
Easy instructions to PRINT:
Things you will need:
Keys to RV to start engine and note odometer
Black Sharpie to write down mileage and date on oil filter
16mm or 5/8″ socket and socket wrench
Oil filter wrench
Disposable gloves (if you don’t want to get oil all over your hands)
6 Quarts of 10W-30 Synthetic Mobil 1 Oil (5 Quart and 1 Quart)
Oil drain pan
Shop towels
Big piece of cardboard to lie on
Funnel
Turn on the ignition to RV and warm it up for 2 minutes, while it’s running, note the mileage and write the mileage and date on the new oil filter and in the maintenance log. Turn off the engine.
Take off the oil fill cap and dipstick on the engine.
Fill the new oil filter with oil and coat the O-ring seal with new oil.
Bring cardboard, shop towels, oil drain pan, oil filter wrench, 16mm or 5/8″ socket set and pre-filled new oil filter (upside down in box) with you, under the RV.
Remove oil filter and drain oil completely – use oil filter wrench if necessary.
Note: When installing the new oil filter, ensure you do not cross-thread – be careful – Install new oil filter and hand tighten (with a firm tightening) or use manufacturers torque spec. DO NOT overtighten.
Wipe up any oil that has spilled on to the undercarriage and/or new oil filter. There should be NO oil drips.
Move oil drain pan under oil pan plug. Remove the plug with 16mm or 5/8″socket set. Old oil will immediately drain. Drain oil completely. Clean off oil drain plug (ensure any gasket on the drain plug is still intact) and once all oil has drained, re-install the oil drain plug and tighten with 16mm or 5/8″ socket wrench. Wipe off plug and underside of the oil pan with shop towels. Ensure there are no leaks.
Place the funnel in the engine oil fill hole and pour in 6 quarts of oil.
Replace engine oil fill cap and dipstick and start the engine. Run for a few minutes. Turn off the engine and check underneath for any leaks (at the oil filter and oil pan plug areas).
Check the dipstick twice to ensure you have enough oil in the RV.
If you need to add oil, add small amounts. Too much oil is almost worse than not enough.
Write down the date and mileage somewhere you can access it easily (maintenance log)
Save receipts for taxes.
Clean up. Using the funnel, empty oil that is in the oil drain pan, back into 5 quarts and 1-quart containers.
Take used oil to O’Reilly’s or auto part store for proper disposal.
You’re done! You just saved more than 50% costs, added much better oil (synthetic), and know more about your vehicle than you did before! So easy!
At this time, I also add the following misc. Items: Fabric softener sheets to the engine compartment area to keep mice and rodents from chewing my wiring and I add bug repellent windshield wiper fluid to ensure it’s topped off. I also check all the other fluids to ensure they are topped off (add if needed) and check the serpentine belt to ensure there are no cracks or wear.
