Today a big change.
I have killed my darling.
The mizzen is gone.
Exlex will not be a canoe yawl.
Exlex the sailing canoe is her new name.
Why?
I did some estimates on lead in this case I use the word in a geometrical sense. That is how far the center of effort is in front of the center of lateral resistance.
It turned out that she will have far to much weather helm.
My last three boats have had lee helm.
Now this one I did everything to get weather helm.
I overdid it quite a bit.
There is no way to from first principles calculate this property. It is all done by rule of thumb.
The existing rules of thumb do not apply to my boat as she is to different.
Luckily my friend Rolf Elisson ( who have written Principles of Yacht Design) and I designed several small ocean going cruisers in the 1990-s
They all turned out with an excellent balance.
Today I spoke to him again and that cleared up things.
My design use the rudder as part of the lateral area. To understand it it helps to think of it as a secound centerboard wich force can be adjusted by rudder angle.
Likewise the bow centerboards force can be adjusted by rising and lower it.
Combining the two gives good control. Lee helm or weather helm can be chosen as desired.
This helps a lot with sailing without selfsteering or autopilot.
