NOW I ADD TWIN KEELS TO RUGGEDIZE EXLEX
Twin keels have been on my mind for a long time in fact since 1980 when I was up in Maine and John Letcher help me to draw a nice twin keeler. I worker on her for three years but things interfered and she never got finished. Boats with bow centerboards took over.
Now the idea is to combine the advantages of bow centerboard and twin keels on Exlex. That will make her slower in light wind but will make her more weatherly in strong. It will also make her a much safer beach landing craft so that I can park her in places that dries out at low tide.
Two events have lead to that. The plan was to double Cape Horn and make a landfall at Valdivia.
However Chiloé Island in Chile have also for a long time been on my mind. Yesterday for no particular reason I turned on Google Maps and looked at the island. It certainly was very attractive to my liking, wild, windy and plenty of rain, but not a lot of marinas very good.
The boats rest on the beach when water ebbs. Also strong winds. With twin keels I can add ballast low down and still keep the desired shallow draft of 45 centimeter or eighteen inches.
The other thing is the newly started war in Ukraine. I do not know how it will develop. And I hope that I will have time to finish my boat before bad things happen here in Sweden.
I think that the risk that they drop atomic bombs on my head is less in a windy creek on a small island in Patagonia

Hi My name is Sven Yrvind. I design, build and cruise small boats. 1962 I left Sweden in 15 feet converted Blekingseka. I soon found out that there was room for improvement. To understand the basic I began to study mathematics and engenering. 1968 I sailed to England via many contries in a converted 13 feet rowing boat. People told me I be more happy on a bigger boat. November that year I found a wreck an old steam launch build 1885 I converted her to a staysail schooner and sailed her to Rio de Janeiro. That voyage advised me that a bigger boat do not bring happiness, happiness is an inside thing. I designed a 6 meter doubble ender built her in my mother basement. Tried to sail around Cape Horn with her but was capsized and pitchpoled. Later I built an 5.9 meter boat in her I rounded Cape Horn in the southern winter June 1980.
