The Ljungström rig invented in Sweden by Fredrick Ljungström in 1933 have some very desiriable properties.
Foremost is the ease to reef. The freestanding mast is just made to rotate to pull on a rope, like a furling jib.
This rotation also makes it possible to get outstanding aereo properties on the wind by turning the mast so that the leech is to lee. That way the mast acts nearly as a wingmast.
The rig was never a succes. It had one bad property. The boomless rig made it difficult to properly sheet the sail.
A partial solution was found in 1945 when a small mast was placed on the aft deck to take the sheet.
My idea is to rake the mast 20° aft then the sail can be sheeted like a jib.
Now I have a second idea and that is to put the upper mast bearing above deck just below the sail in a pipe and on the top of that pipe put the gooseneck. This video illustrates my thinking.
The free standing part of the mast will also be shorter and therefore stronger.
With these improvements the modefied Ljunström rig will work on my boat just fine I hope.
