Rethinking the rudder. G 11 pipes gives new ways to design the rudder due to its immense strenghts.

I got a short sample of G 11 rod and pipe.
Here I am testing the rod with a 70 cm long steel pipe. I am about 70 kilos with 5 kilo clothes and shoes.
I also persuded a freind 110 kilos the rod did not break.
The rudder will not be more than 40 cm below the hull.
Center of pressure will be some 20 cm below hull.
When testing the rod the weights was about 60 cm out or three times as much. That gives 330 kilos at 20 cm.
The diameter of rod is 25 mm. If it is increased to 50 mm it will take 8 times more load or 2.6 tons
The planned displacement of the boat with food and water for 100 days is 1 ton.
I feel fine with this.
Exlex aft end is planned to rest on the rudder when the boat dries out or elsewhere on land.
To make the boat more stable the rudder can be swung 90° either side.
To prevent wear a bronze shoe will be at the bottom of the rudder.
In front of the rudder will be two small fins to prevent things to jam between
rudder and hull.
The good thing with G 11 epoxy/glassfibre laminate is that it is inert. I can use coppercoat antifouling with no problem of corrosion.
Also G 11 glues excellent therefore the rudder blade can be built around the axis no welding needed-
