As the the Ljungström mast of the rig can be rotated it can increase efficiency of the sail by greartly reduce the turbulence on the suction side of the sail. As most of the lift comes from the suction side the efficiency is much increased.
The Laser mast can also be rotated but only with angle of the boom so even if the sail is attached to the mast by a sleeve it not as efficient as the Ljungström sail with its rotating mast.

Hi My name is Sven Yrvind. I design, build and cruise small boats. 1962 I left Sweden in 15 feet converted Blekingseka. I soon found out that there was room for improvement. To understand the basic I began to study mathematics and engenering. 1968 I sailed to England via many contries in a converted 13 feet rowing boat. People told me I be more happy on a bigger boat. November that year I found a wreck an old steam launch build 1885 I converted her to a staysail schooner and sailed her to Rio de Janeiro. That voyage advised me that a bigger boat do not bring happiness, happiness is an inside thing. I designed a 6 meter doubble ender built her in my mother basement. Tried to sail around Cape Horn with her but was capsized and pitchpoled. Later I built an 5.9 meter boat in her I rounded Cape Horn in the southern winter June 1980.
