There are many comments suggesting that I should add a hull to make Exlex a catamaran. If there is more comments like that the ansver is this video.
MULTIHULLS
Why multihulls is not for me. I have been interested in multihulls for a long time and I have been discussing multihulls with many of its pioneers, James Wharram, Jim Brown, Walter Greene, Dick Newick, John Shuttleworth, The Gougon brothers, Mike Birch, Tom Follet, Nigel Irens, Derek Kelsall, and Phil Weld.
1962 I read Haddon and Hornells Caonoes of Oceania
First time I met James Wharram and Ruth was 1963. It was in Dublin. I did spend a few days with them on Rongo.
I was already an active member of The Amateur Yacht Research Society and had a long correspondence with John Morewood.
1967 I was in London to mann the AYRS stand at the Earls Court boat show. Derek Kelsall had just won the Round Brittain Race and his trimaran Toria was exhibited outside. The mood of the multihull people was good.
Then 1975 – 76 I worked with Dick Newick for nearly one year.
The reason I am telling you this is to validate my claim that I am familiar with the multihull question.
Multihulls can be fast. They have mostly shallow draft. They have a lot of deck space.
But there is a dark side them and the more I learn the less suitable I find them.
They are resource-intensive, they take up a lot of harbor space and worst of all the are dangerous because when they flip they stay upside down.
Phil Weld sailed his 60 feet Dick Newick design 1976 to participate in the 1976 OSTAR. A wave flipped it over. An other Newick design Three Cheers was lost with man in the same race. However Mike Birch came in on second place in Val the small Newick I had helped to build, just behind the huge Pen Duik 6 sailed by Eric Tabarly.
Alain Colas In Pen Duick was lost in a later race.
There have been many more accidents but mention these three boats I have been more or less involved with.
For me to build a much smaller multihull would be unsound. I like to sail the lonely cold high latitudes where often strong winds dominate. That’s not places suitable for a small multihull.
I am making this video about multihulls because frequently there is comments that I shall turn my boat into a multihull. I believe it is for me sane to stay away from them. They are for others with different values. This is just to let you know my opinion.
