Its inded very simple to make. Use a bit of rope saturate with epoxy. To make it stronger wrap sting or more rope around it build up thickness to the desired strenght.
No it is not as stiff as glassfibre. But its not only Youngs modulus that makes a fitting stiff. Adding bulk is as important and polyesterfibre is half the weight of glassfibre.
Besides on a small boat strenght is rarly a problem. Most forces are moderate.
Still design and test for bad conditions. I have sailed for decades without anything breaking or needing repair. A small boat and keep it simple makes a happy life with few problems .

Hi My name is Sven Yrvind. I design, build and cruise small boats. 1962 I left Sweden in 15 feet converted Blekingseka. I soon found out that there was room for improvement. To understand the basic I began to study mathematics and engenering. 1968 I sailed to England via many contries in a converted 13 feet rowing boat. People told me I be more happy on a bigger boat. November that year I found a wreck an old steam launch build 1885 I converted her to a staysail schooner and sailed her to Rio de Janeiro. That voyage advised me that a bigger boat do not bring happiness, happiness is an inside thing. I designed a 6 meter doubble ender built her in my mother basement. Tried to sail around Cape Horn with her but was capsized and pitchpoled. Later I built an 5.9 meter boat in her I rounded Cape Horn in the southern winter June 1980.
