There is less space in a small boat than a big.
To find a good place for the centerboard – the centerboard is one way of preventing leeway – I put it in the bow.
The rationale was that the combined center of effort of centerboard and rudder was between them proportional to thier areas and angle of attack
That way it could be where I liked.
The open test boat was very fast indeed and pointed high.
1988 a decked cruising boat was ready for sea trials.
The following year I sailed her from France to Ireland to Newfoundland.
It was a high latitude crossing against the prewailing westerlies.
At one period there was a series of westerly gales. Deeply reefed, the bow centerbord down all the way Bris Amfibie as was her name pointed very high. She slowly fore reached. After eleven days when the sun came out I got a series of heights and did the calculations surprisingly we had came more to the west than when the bad weather started.
This way of handling bad weather I realiesed was much superior than heaving to or using a drouge when the destination is to windward.
1974 with the first Bris in the Roaring Forties I had used a drouge when the gale was gone I had lost 150 miles to my destination.
So after many years she is here again, the bow centerboard.
