Sven Yrvind Glass Fiber Boat Lamination – A Closer Look

Hello friends, this is IR reporting live from the heart of Sven Yrvind’s boat building adventures. Over the last couple days, we’ve witnessed some impressive progress on what’s been an innovative off-part of the boat, especially concerning the laminations.

Incredible Lamination Techniques

The third day saw even more laminations take place on this particular area of the boat. This section, measuring a substantial 1.7 meters, boasts almost no frames at all. It’s a testament to Yrvind’s innovative mindset that he has replaced traditional framing with an advanced lamination technique.

Layered Innovation

In the limited space of 118 CM, Yrvind cleverly layered two and even three laminations over each other. This impressive setup is made using an extraordinary 450 G glass fiber, which is expected to perform as effectively as conventional frames. The boat’s small size makes it particularly susceptible to glacial forces; however, thanks to its square-cube law benefits, it’s unlikely to encounter any issues with stability.

Progress Update

The current status of this section is nothing short of completed, with two more laminations on the opposite side expected to be finished in due course. It’s a marvel how much can be accomplished in a single day with determination and precision.

Hi My name is Sven Yrvind. I design, build and cruise small boats. 1962 I left Sweden in 15 feet converted Blekingseka. I soon found out that there was room for improvement. To understand the basic I began to study mathematics and engenering. 1968 I sailed to England via many contries in a converted 13 feet rowing boat. People told me I be more happy on a bigger boat. November that year I found a wreck an old steam launch build 1885 I converted her to a staysail schooner and sailed her to Rio de Janeiro. That voyage advised me that a bigger boat do not bring happiness, happiness is an inside thing. I designed a 6 meter doubble ender built her in my mother basement. Tried to sail around Cape Horn with her but was capsized and pitchpoled. Later I built an 5.9 meter boat in her I rounded Cape Horn in the southern winter June 1980.
