Hello friends, this is IR wind. Today, I have a new idea to share with you about stability in boats without the need for traditional lead ballast.

The Experiment: Water as Ballast

Yrvind has always been against using lead ballast in his boats, and now he proposes an innovative solution. By storing water beneath the bed of his vessel, he can create a stable foundation for his boat without the need for heavy and potentially hazardous materials.

Calculations and Weight Distribution

To calculate the potential weight of the water ballast, Yrvind considers various factors. He calculates that a combination of water in containers and batteries can provide an impressive total weight equivalent to that of three men weighing 78 kilos each. This discovery leads him to wonder whether such a setup could be sufficient for maintaining stability in his boat.

Benefits of Using Water as Ballast

The idea of using water instead of lead ballast offers several advantages. It is more environmentally friendly, lighter when transporting the boat on a trailer behind a car, and can even be consumed by the sailors while at sea. Additionally, as Yrvind points out, water occupies more volume compared to its weight, providing an extra margin of safety in case of capsizing.

Future Implications and Potential Challenges

If Yrvind’s experiment proves successful, it could lead to a revolution in small ocean-going boats. By eliminating the need for lead ballast, boats could become cheaper and more eco-friendly, reducing their environmental impact. However, there may be challenges ahead, such as ensuring adequate stability at low angles of heel (10-20°), which Yrvind is still investigating.

The Importance of Experiments in Marine Exploration

Sven Yrvind’s willingness to take chances and experiment with unconventional ideas has been a driving force behind his work. By sharing his discoveries and insights, he encourages others in the marine community to think creatively about boat design and sustainability.

Summary

In this episode, Sven Yrvind presents an exciting idea of achieving stability in boats without lead ballast by using water and batteries. Although challenges remain, this experiment has the potential to revolutionize small ocean-going vessels and contribute significantly to environmental sustainability.
