Sven Yrvind Shares Mission to Create Safe Small Boat for Ocean Crossings

At 85 years young, Swedish sailor Sven Yrvind has set out on a new mission to create the ultimate safe small boat capable of withstanding stormy seas. In this video, he discusses his innovative design and how support for the project can make it a reality.

About the Mission

The core objective of Sven’s mission is to develop a small boat that ensures maximum safety in storm conditions. This design will not only be robust and balanced but also easy for him, at his age, to operate effectively during long ocean crossings.

Design Innovations

Sven’s current boat is made from plywood and serves as a testing platform for his design. Once the research and development are complete, he plans to create a stronger and more durable ‘divell’ version of the small boat. Key design features include:

  • Ability to capsize without water entering the cabin
  • Hatches providing easy access to all equipment and gear
  • Safety belts that remain secure even during a capsize
  • Lifelines ensuring easy access to all masts without stepping on the deck

Choosing Small Boats for Enhanced Strength

Sven bases his design choices on Sir Isaac Newton’s Square-Cube law discovered by Galileo. He emphasizes that smaller boats offer greater strength compared to larger ones, with the supporting structure increasing in square proportion while the load only increases in cubic proportion.

Importance of Location and Weather for Ocean Crossings

In planning his ocean crossings, Sven considers several factors such as coastlines, rocks, and seasonal changes in weather conditions. He emphasizes the importance of choosing an appropriate departure location based on favorable weather patterns.

Project Support

Sven recognizes that he may require additional funds to progress with this ambitious project. He appeals for support from viewers, emphasizing that the small boat design caters specifically to elderly sailors who need a safe and accessible vessel for their voyages.

Oscar’s Contribution

In addition to Sven, Oscar has been providing assistance with various aspects of the project. The duo hopes that supporters can offer financial backing and help bring this unique small boat design to life.
