Ep 11 – Completing All Stages for Side Lockers Construction

This week on IR Wind, we join Sven Yrvind as he reaches a significant milestone in his boat-building process. After completing all the necessary stages, Yrvind has now successfully finished constructing the side lockers. Let’s delve into the detailed steps and techniques he used to achieve this feat.

Marking the Height

To ensure a good height, Yrvind begins by starting with one side locker and making small adjustments using wooden fillets. The lockers are then measured against a spirit level to achieve perfect leveling.

To get the height right, I start with this piece here, making it a bit smaller at the top to fit into these fillets, explains Yrvind. Then it goes down into this wedge and onto this ledge.

Cutting and Marking Pieces

Next, Yrvind marks all the pieces required for each locker before starting assembly. Each piece is marked with numbers for easy identification and order.

In this case, he says, This one here is number two because it’s got ‘two’ written on them. The numbered pieces are then arranged in their intended positions, allowing Yrvind to work on achieving the right height and leveling.

Leveling and Assembly

The side lockers are assembled using a Teflon-coated screw, which is screwed in with Yrvind’s driver. By creating an angle with the driver, he ensures that the locker maintains its desired height. The level is checked throughout the assembly process to ensure perfect alignment.

When it’s level, I can screw the other end on too, says Yrvind, demonstrating his technique for assembling these storage compartments while maintaining accuracy and stability.

The Use of Clamps and Spacers

To secure the lockers, clamps are used alongside spacers made from 9 mm plywood with an extra 3mm added to allow for bending. The use of a clamp spacer ensures that everything stays in place while the epoxy cures.

Preparation for Final Fit

In preparation for the final fit, Yrvind marks the plywood lid on both sides using black lines. He also makes small dots where screws will be placed to ensure he can locate them easily.

I make little dots with a black line where I can find them again, says Yrvind, showing viewers how he prepares his work area for the next step in the process.

The Epoxy Application

Finally, after all parts are properly aligned and marked, Yrvind applies epoxy to each side, ensuring a secure bond. He uses a brush with a ‘haircut’ to apply the second layer of epoxy, making the work process quicker.

In addition, he marks both sides of the pieces to aid in his work and shows viewers the black dots indicating screw locations against white epoxy.

Preparing for the Next Day

To end the day’s work, Yrvind prepares a list of tasks for the following day, involving gluing plywood pieces to create a ledge on the boat floor. He also explains how these will be attached along the bed lengthwise.

This meticulous construction process demonstrates the precision and dedication that Sven Yrvind puts into every aspect of building his boat. Through careful planning, marking, leveling, and assembly, he ensures that the side lockers are not only functional but also perfectly integrated with the rest of the vessel.
