Sides for Sleeping Room – The Plan

Sven Yrvind is no stranger to creating comfortable living spaces in his boats. In this episode, he continues working on enhancing the sleeping area of his vessel. He explains that he wants to install sides for the bed to provide more stability and a sense of privacy while sailing.

Yrvind mentions that the sides will be raised up to a height of approximately 1.8 meters at the end of the bed. This added feature aims to increase the coziness of his onboard accommodations without compromising the available headroom.

The Mockup

To visualize and test his idea, Sven constructs a mockup of the bed sides. He demonstrates how they will be positioned, extending from the front to the end of the sleeping area.

While working on this prototype, Yrvind identifies that some adjustments are needed. Specifically, he realizes that additional parts are required for the setup to function properly.

Installation Process

The following day, Sven proceeds with the installation of the bed sides in earnest. He securely attaches them using clamps and spreaders to ensure stability. The sides are placed against the front portion of the boat’s structure, extending down towards the ends of the sleeping area.

To facilitate this process, Yrvind has rigged up his workspace with necessary tools and equipment, including a spreader to maintain the proper distance between the side pieces. This setup allows for efficient and accurate installation.

Taking Away the Scaffolding

Once the bed sides are firmly in place, Sven reflects on the progress made thus far. He looks forward to removing the temporary scaffolding, as it has served its purpose during the installation process but is no longer needed.

The final outcome will be a more robust and refined sleeping arrangement, with the added sides enhancing the overall comfort level for any crew members using this space while sailing.

Hi My name is Sven Yrvind. I design, build and cruise small boats. 1962 I left Sweden in 15 feet converted Blekingseka. I soon found out that there was room for improvement. To understand the basic I began to study mathematics and engenering. 1968 I sailed to England via many contries in a converted 13 feet rowing boat. People told me I be more happy on a bigger boat. November that year I found a wreck an old steam launch build 1885 I converted her to a staysail schooner and sailed her to Rio de Janeiro. That voyage advised me that a bigger boat do not bring happiness, happiness is an inside thing. I designed a 6 meter doubble ender built her in my mother basement. Tried to sail around Cape Horn with her but was capsized and pitchpoled. Later I built an 5.9 meter boat in her I rounded Cape Horn in the southern winter June 1980.
