1 July 2022 Evolution of my boats.

1962 I left Sweden for the first time in a 15 feet converted small workboat that that I had converted into a small floating home.
It was not my first try but the first one that worked.
It worked well still it did not take long for me to come up with ideas that could improve her.
I spent my days in librarys to enlarge my knowledge. Soon I realised that mathematics was the neccesary base for several years I endeavored to understand the beuty of mathematics. Even if much was abouve my understanding I enjoyed it very much that but not so much that I forgot the boats.
Boats followed boat. There was always something new to add. And the boats did get better and my voyafges got longer and longer in June 1980 in the southern winter I even rounded Cap Horn in a 19 foot boat.
But I was not satisfied I rised the bar. Now I added shallow draft and slimness to the desired qualities of the small boat.
Below is some of the new ideas.

NEXT BOAT
First, and this is important to understand, I will make long ocean passages in high latitudes in the boat I am building now. But a boa is a complex structure that needs long time to think about.
By year 2023 the present boat might just be ready for sea trials. Departure might be 2024.
Year 2025 -26 I may reach Chile. Give me a year or two to sail back and do a new start and we are in the end of this decade, but this is fine.
There is two kind of reasons for a new boat. One is all the changes made to this one like the bulkhead openings, the space for the moving ballast, the bigger bow centerboard, the opening to the storage in the dining room. The other one is change of my mind and rising the bar. For example I like a boat that is six beams long and for twin keels I prefer hard chines.

Second, this is a primarily plan, many changes will be made. Yacht design is an iterating occupation, but the next boat will be very similar to the present one that is very similar to the previous one and so on. My boats are evolving.

Size, she will be 7.2 meter long and have a 1.2 meter beam. That’s makes her about 1 meter longer than the present boat that is 6.27 meter long.
Some people will say that I am getting myself a bigger boat.
I say she will be longer yeas but not bigger. In fact she be slightly smaller by about 2 % as beam have to be taken into account.
Present boat 6.27 X 1.4 = 8.78
New boat 7.2 X 1.2 = 8.64
I will use the same lines that Matt Layden helped me to develop for a chine runner but making her a double ender by mirroring the fore part in the midsection and applying different scale factors to beam height and length.
Her longer waterline will make her a bit faster as I hope to keep the displacement the same.

Boats like whaleboats are six beams long. They are dear to me.
Small, shallow draft ocean cruisers are difficult to make practical. That is why the planned boat have had a long gestation.

My present boat have round bilges. That would have been good for the original route non-stop from the Azores to NZ south of Africa and Australia.
Factors such as long time at sea without exercise of my legs and Putins war made me change the destination to Chile making the passage via Cape Horn.
The new route made me add twin keels for cruising the Falkland Islands and Chiloe.
Had I planned on Chile before starting to build I would have made the hull with hard chines as I think that that would be better for shallow draft twin keels. I think that they would work somewhat like vertical chine runners.

To gain 4 cm beam space I will use 50 mm Divinycell instead of 70. That way I get 2 cm more interior beam as my previous boat that had a beam of 1.22 and that I found plenty.

The accommodation: The hull will be divided into the following parts.
Fore part 2 meter long.
Bed 1.9 meter long.
Dining room 1.1 meter long.
Aft part 2.2 meter long.
Actual living spaces will be a bit smaller as the hull structure do have thickness but that is OK.

The two bulkheads at each end of the living area will have elliptical openings to more easy be closed with canvas.

The forepeak will be 30 cm longer than the present I will take advantage of that to make the bow centerboard a bit longer with larger area.

The after peak might get an electric motor. A lot of research is being done into electric motors and batteries. If scientists are successful we may have safe sodium or solid state batteries by the end of this decade.
An electric motor would be handy for entering a port and to keep clear of shipping when becalmed.

Besides that other interesting things may have changed on Mother Earth.
