Tackling the Cause of Our Breakdowns | Sailing the Wild West

Slim & Soph are taking on one of the most challenging legs of their Sailing Nakama journey yet – sailing the wild west coast of Western Australia. This stretch of coastline, stretching over 22,000 nautical miles, is notorious for being a truly testing course.

The couple find themselves in need to fix their fuel tank issues amidst strong winds and huge ocean swells, as the rugged coast provides yet another challenge on their long voyage south. Will they manage to tackle this beast head on?

A Journey Through The Wild West Coast

Western Australia’s wild west coast is a sight to behold, stretching over 22,000 nautical miles and presenting numerous challenges. Slim & Soph set out to tackle one of the most difficult breakdowns yet in this remote coastal adventure. Their journey takes them through strong winds and huge ocean swells, making for an unforgettable experience.

Fuel Tank Contamination

During their voyage south along the coast, Slim & Soph encounter a fuel tank problem. The dormant monster residing in their fuel tank rears its head as they are faced with breaking down in one of the most crucial moments – while coming through the entrance where the wind has completely died off.

Mystery Items Found In Fuel Tank

As Slim and Soph dive into their fuel tank, they make a series of discoveries that only adds to the challenge. They found metal items like unidentified sinking objects (USOs), and even an alan key, adding to the growing list of issues they face while on the west coast.

Addressing The Fuel Contamination Issue

To address their fuel contamination issue, Slim & Soph take a few days off in Canavan to tackle the beast. They clean the inspection port, disconnect fuel lines, and even milked an old pump in order to get the bug out of the tank.

Recovery And Preparation For The Journey Ahead

Once their fuel tank is clean, Slim and Soph make use of EcoFlow’s River 2 Pro power station for their Land-based adventures. This power generator helps keep their gadgets charged while they work remotely, study, or simply explore the beautiful Western Australia coast.

Navigating The West Coast

As Slim & Soph make their way south towards the Southern Ocean, they face some strong winds that try to hinder their journey. But with a determined spirit and unwavering resolve, they successfully sail through Shark Bay and anchor at Dirk Hartog Island.

The Journey Continues

The adventure doesn’t stop there. Slim & Soph will be heading further offshore to some new islands in search of some crayfish, as their journey continues along the wild and remote west coast of Australia.

Follow the story of Slim and Soph as they take on the challenge of the wild west coast with a determined spirit. Will you join them on this adventure? Find out more about their experiences and incredible journey by watching their video.

The coast of Western Australia stretches over 2,500 nautical miles, this is a distance greater than from the east to west coast of the entire United States. We’re beating our way down this mammoth coast into strong prevailing southerly winds. Nakama, our wee 34-foot sailboat is proving she was built for the task, but all this bashing has churned up the dormant monster living in our fuel tank, causing our engine to breakdown in the most crucial moments. We’ve gotten ourselves to a spec of civilisation to tackle this beast head-on. It's going to be a messy and challenging task, but we're determined to get our boat back in tip-top shape and to rid the diesel bug from our tank to continue our adventure south towards the Southern Ocean.
