OUR SCARIEST NIGHT AT SEA: How We Almost Became a Statistic On The Shipwreck Coast

In this thrilling episode, we recount our most challenging and frightening sail to date. Battling relentless 30 knot southerly winds with a 6m swell, our harrowing tale begins when the engine suddenly dies while trying to negotiate a treacherous reef pass. Adding to our struggles, our autopilot fails as we attempt a desperate heave-to, ultimately deciding against entering the unsafe anchorage.

Sailing Down The Wild West Coast

Originally planning to day-hop along Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, we encountered an earlier-than-expected change in the season, putting us squarely in the path of unwelcoming southerly winds. With university commitments tying us down and not wanting to risk missing our study window, we raced to cover as much ground as possible before conditions deteriorated further.

A Wake-Up Call

This harrowing sail truly tested our mettle, serving as an essential learning experience. It was only after being thrust into the thick of it that we fully comprehended the gravity of what lies ahead as we progress down this treacherous coastline.

The Toughest Night Aboard Karma

After an exhausting day battling the elements, what followed was a harrowing night filled with chaos and fear. Submerged in the crashing waves of a merciless sea, we endured the pounding as our anchor dislodged and crashed into Narma’s bow. Tired and exhausted, sleep became a distant memory as hand-steering consumed us both mentally and physically.

Gratitude for Our Safety Net

As we entered the Coral Bay anchorage, a chance encounter with fellow boaters Hagar and T&J saved us from potentially dire circumstances. Their timely assistance provided us much-needed relief after our challenging day and night on the wild west coast.

The Lessons Learned

This harrowing experience has left a lasting impression on both of us. It taught us the importance of being prepared for anything and recognizing when to seek shelter, as well as the value of maintaining a positive outlook in challenging situations.

A Dangerous Coastal Adventure

The west coast of Australia is renowned for its treacherous conditions, claiming countless lives throughout history. As we continue our journey down this infamous coastline, we’ll remain vigilant and better prepared to face any challenge that may come our way.

Keep Watching For More Adventures

In future episodes, join us as we tackle remote boat jobs and attempt to salvage our broken vessel from the harsh clutches of this unforgiving coast. Until then, stay safe on the water and remember to always be prepared for the worst.

We’re not superstitious people. But, when it comes to sailing, there are a few things we avoid doing and saying. In this particular scenario, it was just as I was revelling in how fantastic Nakama’s performance had been lately when things instantly began to unravel…
