Before setting off on a sailing voyage, you obsess over everything possible scenario that could go wrong and the tools and spares and spares of spares you would need to resolve an array of issues that could potentially occur while you’re out there alone in the wilderness of the ocean. But it’s the one crucial thing that you think you have a spare of that when it breaks, you don’t. After leaving Cooktown and heading towards Lizard Island, our autopilot has a moment and decides it doesn’t want a bar of it. We take over hand steering however, with big beamy seas and 20 knots of wind, we are confronted with an issue that has been concealed under an old mount on our tiller. We are now offshore with our steering compromised. We think of solutions quickly and hope we can make it to our destination.
