A Transient Life | Sailing The Wild West Leg 3
Boat life has been a blissful experience for us over the last little while. I prepared dinner, something we’re doing for the first time as we are currently living on the Indian Ocean aboard our sailboat. Our boat has become our home, and these beautiful islands of Monte Bell off the coast of Western Australia have truly turned into our backyard.
Once an area where atomic blasts occurred, it is now a haven for marine life – which feels like we’ve had too much fun with. We’ve been spear fishing monster trout here that I can’t even fit in frame – my personal best so far! We also went crayfish hunting and have managed to get some fresh crayfish for dinner. However, our time here is limited as the seasons keep us on our toes; this will soon be our last leg before heading back out into the wild blue yonder.
Exploring the Hidden Lagoons
We decided to explore some of these hidden lagoons nestled between the many islands, hoping for some unique snorkeling spots. While trying to get into one of them, it became evident that we needed to be careful; it was shallow and the tide was running too hard.
Pristine Marine Life
We finally made our way into this amazing lagoon that had the most incredible coral and marine life we’d ever seen. Even though there’s a contrast between the bombed area (it was hit by three nuclear detonations) and the rest of the waters, the abundance of sea life is impressive.
Fishing for Dinner
Feeling adventurous one day, we decided to fish for dinner – specifically a Mangrove Jack that we’d been wanting to catch. We caught a 40cm Jack on this outing, so it was perfect size and taste when roasted with potatoes for our dinner.
Living on the Indian Ocean
We moved onto other locations before eventually leaving the Monte Bell Islands and continuing to sail southwards along this wild west coast of Australia, heading towards X – which would ultimately become our southernmost point.
Montebello Islands | Our Final Days
In our final days at the Montebello Islands, we did a little exploring on foot and by dinghy before finally departing. It’s always tough to leave such pristine spots behind, but we know it is part of this transient lifestyle. This leg has taken us on some truly incredible journeys, both in terms of scenery and challenges.
Next Adventure
With a fully loaded tank and fuel in hand from our pit stop at the marina, we set off on this adventure with renewed energy. The Indian Ocean welcomed us back as we prepared for our journey further southward along Australia’s wild west coast.
New Challenges
We’re now faced with new challenges, including navigating the tricky channels and weather changes while keeping an eye out for marine life like these enormous whales that keep popping up. Life on the sea is truly a never-ending adventure!

Our Upcoming Adventure
We’re currently planning for a future adventure, The Numa Race, where we’ll be sailing to Nama from Sydney and back. But unfortunately due to recent events unfolding in New Caledonia, which include civil unrest, riots, arson attacks – essentially bordering on civil war, the race has been postponed by one month (if it even happens). Our thoughts are with everyone over there as they face these tough times.
Thank you all for your support and understanding during this period. We’ll continue to bring you updates on our travels via our social media platforms or website, and let you know when any major plans change or new adventures commence!
As for now, until we reach out to you with another exciting adventure update, stay safe, stay positive and keep that wanderlust spirit alive! We’ll see you all on our next journey… Cheers.
We’re currently living on the Indian Ocean aboard our sailboat, and when your boat is your home our backyard is always changing. And this week it's the Montebello Islands. But like anywhere we pass through, our time here is limited as the seasons keep us on our toes. We need to continue our journey south towards the Southern Ocean before the change in weather becomes too unforgiving…
