Heya, we’re Cozzy and Mitcho. Thanks for joining us on our Sailing Ocean Life and for sailing with us on this remarkable journey, exploring the ancient art found in the Dampier Archipelago Islands.
MuRuJuga (pronounced MooRuJooga) meaning “hip bone sticking out” in the Ngarluma-Yaburara (pronounced Narlooma YabooRara) language refers to the MuRuJuga land here in the Dampier Archipelago which form the stunning group of 42 islands surrounding the Pilbara towns of Dampier & Karratha in Western Australia.
Don Byrne, (Cozzy’s Dad) is an acclaimed artist and in fact converts ground iron ore to make his paints and with that creates stunning paintings depicting iconic Australian outback images. It’s something to be admired and I wish that talent was passed down to me, but the ancient art we sailed to at the Dampier Archipelago islands is very different. It’s created by hand from patiently scratching something very sharp into the solid rocks faces found throughout the archipelago islands and is also quite remarkable.
No one really knows how long ago these amazing pieces of art were created on this unsympathetic landscape, some smart people suggest they could have been here for over 30,000 years when the islands weren’t islands but were huge mountains formed from volcanic activity and the sea levels were some 100m lower than today. It must have been an impressive mountain range back then— offering tree-shaded areas and pools of water that probably welcomed Aborigine visitors from the surrounding plains.
It’s hard to believe that there’s estimated over one million pieces of art to be seen here today, they are very cool pictures of kangaroos, sting rays and some non-human like looking forms that look something like aliens. But the coolest thing is that it’s considered one of the greatest collections of rock art in the world, freakin unbelievable!!!
We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, it was epic!
