We sail to St Pierre, Martinique - the Caribbean city wiped out by the catastrophic eruption of Mt Pelée in 1902. What remains today is both haunting and unforgettable.
Hey legends, welcome aboard another adventure with us on Salty Days Adventures! ⛵🌴
This week we sail into the stunning French Caribbean island of Martinique and check out the wild history of Saint-Pierre - once known as the Paris of the Caribbean.
These days the town feels super relaxed… colourful streets, waterfront cafés, rum bars, and Mount Pelée looming in the background looking all calm and innocent. But in 1902, that volcano absolutely ripped the place apart.
In just a couple of minutes, Mount Pelée wiped out almost the entire city and killed nearly 30,000 people in one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in modern history.
In this episode we wander through the ruins of Saint-Pierre, dive into the crazy story behind the eruption, check out the old theatre, learn about the warnings people ignored, the weird animal behaviour before it blew, and explore the eerie remains still standing today.
Honestly, this place blew us away, pun intended. One minute you’re soaking up beautiful French-Caribbean vibes… the next you’re standing in the middle of one of the biggest disasters the Caribbean has ever seen.
