Why Are We Always the Smallest Boat in the Marina? Our New Addition Makes Up for It! - Ep. 248

In this episode of Sailing Zephyr, we successfully upgrade our sailboat's engine with a new water pump, ensuring it runs beautifully with no coolant leaks! After 4 hours of work, we reward ourselves with a delightful Long Beach walk, where our pups hunt for crabs and fish, and go coconuts with coconuts!

A few days later, we receive an exciting call—someone is lending us their air conditioning system. We dash to the marina to enjoy some days of pure bliss in air conditioning. During this 7 nm journey, we push the engine to see if any leaks spring up.

Installing a New Water Pump on Your Yanmar Engine: Sailing Zephyr’s Experience

Sailing enthusiasts and liveaboard cruisers alike face various challenges aboard their vessels. From repairing electrical systems to addressing cooling issues in marine engines, knowledge is key for maintaining a functional boat. In Episode 248 of Sailing Zephyr’s video series, the crew shares insights into installing a new water pump on their Yanmar engine. This process sheds light not only on how such installations are performed but also addresses the challenges that may arise. The Issue at Hand The video begins with a discussion of the problem they were experiencing—excessive coolant leakage from the water pump. This issue, it turns out, was due to wear and tear on their existing pump, which had significant play within its housing. Preparing for the New Water Pump Knowing that a replacement was necessary, the crew wasted no time. With their trusty dogs Flint and Kira by their side, they set about removing the old water pump. This task proved challenging due to numerous hoses connected to it. After several hours of effort, the pump was removed. The Installation Process With the old pump out, they proceeded to install their new water pump. They began by securing hoses leading to the hot water tank. Ensuring each connection was tight and secure, they then moved on to the mounting bracket for the engine cover and thermostat. Troubleshooting Coolant Management After successfully reinstalling all components, they filled the system with coolant. However, this brought about a new set of challenges—air pockets in the engine’s cooling system needed to be cleared. The crew explained that this process, known as “burping,” involves running the engine intermittently and topping off the coolant levels until no further air bubbles emerge from the hoses. Testing the Results The final test was running the engine under various conditions to check for any leaks. They also monitored the coolant levels, adding a minimal amount (approximately 4-5 ounces) as necessary. The Outcome The crew expressed their satisfaction with the successful installation of the new water pump, noting no signs of dripping upon initial use. They highlighted that a thorough check would be necessary after the engine had reached full operating temperature. Additional Maintenance and Preparations Given the heat, Sailing Zephyr decided to take advantage of their marina stay not just for cooling down but also for conducting necessary maintenance tasks like cleaning lines that had begun smelling due to stagnation. The crew planned on filling their water tanks with bleach overnight to flush out all lines, a crucial step in preventing odor and potential future issues. The Conclusion In summary, Sailing Zephyr’s journey through installing a new water pump offers valuable lessons for any boat owner facing similar challenges. With clear steps, detailed explanations, and personal insights into their decision-making process, viewers gain not just technical knowledge but also practical advice on maintenance tasks like burping the engine coolant system. This episode underscores the importance of vigilance and immediate action when it comes to addressing boat health.
