This week for the first time ever we’re in Grenada in the Eastern Caribbean the southernmost of the Windward Islands. This English-speaking country lies about 100 miles north of South America, making Grenada sit right below the hurricane belt.
After leaving Florida on May 17th, we finally arrived safely here in Grenada after quite a few delays and breakdowns. Five weeks later we’re finally able to breathe, relax, and explore for a few days until we haul the boat out.
One of our favorite things to do when arriving in a new place is rent a car and explore inland Grenada, as well as many other Caribbean countries that were settled by the British. It’s interesting to note that in these countries, they drive on the left side of the road.
We had to haul the boat out so that we could get a few things repaired and fixed, including fixing one of our Rudder’s which possibly was taken off by an Orca.
The crew also enjoyed their time in Grenada while it lasted, even though they were getting the boat ready for repairs and eventually had to leave. It’s always sad to say goodbye and leave a place that you’ve come to enjoy so much.
In the meantime, we rented a car and went to the US. One of the main reasons for this was because our eldest son Finn needed to get his driver’s license.
Finn had just turned 18 years old and after having his permit for several months, he needed to practice driving more before taking his test. This would prepare him for his upcoming van life adventure that would commence shortly afterward.
This episode also had the crew reflecting on some tough times they had recently faced, especially in relation to their good friend JJ Rice who had sadly passed away just a few weeks prior.
JJ and his family were close friends with Jack and Kate, and JJ was particularly skilled in repairing boats. The accident was difficult for everyone to cope with but the crew are incredibly grateful for all the support they’ve received from viewers during this hard time.
As Sailing Zatara crew prepares to leave for further maintenance, they say their goodbyes to their children who have had a challenging time themselves lately.
Their son Finn will be starting his van life adventure soon and heading up to Montana, while the rest of the crew take some much-needed time apart before potentially meeting back up in Tonga, where Jack and Kate are currently staying with JJ’s family.
So be sure to join Sailing Zatara as they sail through beautiful waters and navigate the many exciting adventures and challenges that come their way. Stay tuned for more thrilling stories, boat maintenance endeavors, culture explorations, and more on this fascinating series!
