After 8 years of traveling the world, Sailing Zatara shares their top 10 favorite places they have ever visited. This list isn’t based on typical tourist attractions but rather on personal experiences and what made each destination memorable for the entire family.
#10: The Maldives
The Maldes, an Indian Ocean island chain located at the southern tip of India, were a dream destination for the Zatara Family. They swam with sharks, stingrays, and enjoyed crystal clear water at world-class resorts.
#9: Greece
Greece’s stunning Mediterranean landscape including epic cliffs and rich history made it the ninth on their list. The Zatara Family explored underwater caves, learned about its significant role in Western philosophy and democracy.
#8: Iceland
The volcanic island of Iceland boasts a dramatic landscape filled with waterfalls and massive ice caps. The Zatara Family hiked through breathtaking ice caves, swam in the Silfur Rift – some of the coldest and clearest waters globally.
#7: First Ocean Crossing
Completing their first ocean crossing to the Marquesas Islands marked a significant milestone for the Zatara Family, crossing the Pacific. They relished an unforgettable sense of accomplishment.
#6: Fiji
The pristine Fiji islands boast lush mountains, clear lagoons, and some of the world’s most renowned diving sites. The Zatara Family explored secluded lagoons at Zatara Flats, a spot they discovered in Google Maps.
#5: Bahamas
The Bahamas offered white sandy beaches and turquoise waters – crucial for provisioning their boat during the early stages of liveaboard cruising. The Zatara Family also enjoyed exceptional snorkeling and diving.

A six-week road trip encompassing South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe resulted in a safari adventure like no other. The Zatara Family witnessed wildlife up close, canoed the Okavango Delta, and even took a helicopter tour over Victoria Falls.

Having sailed over 3000 miles along Western Australia’s breathtaking coastline – from Esperance to Dampier – they experienced crystal clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and diverse marine life. This untamed region offered both rugged Outback and white sandy shores.

Sailing Zatara
As my husband and I entered our mid-40s, we realized we were completely exhausted with corporate America and the effect it was having on our marriage and our kids. Something definitely had to change. So, we saved some cash, gathered our four kids and, regardless of having no prior sailing experience, sold our suburban Texas home and bought a sailboat. Since the beginning of this crazy impromptu adventure in late 2016, we have now sailed over 30,000 nautical miles: the first year in a monohull (Beneteau 55’), the rest in a catamaran (Privilege 585). It's not our goal in these videos to be politically correct or make every viewer happy; nor is it to flaunt our obviously gorgeous and toned figures (not). We want to share honestly what we are experiencing on this adventure and how we are evolving as a family. We simply hope you laugh, learn, ponder, and get inspired.
