S4E2 Solo Atlantic Crossing: Sailing the Atlantic Ocean Alone in a 21ft Home Built Sailboat Pt2

Welcome to Part 2 of our solo Atlantic crossing series where we join an extraordinary sailor on a voyage like no other. After leaving Norfolk, VA, the Wave Rover, a 21ft home-built sailboat, sets forth on the open sea with her skipper, ready for an unforgettable journey across the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

The Journey Begins

24 hours into their voyage, Wave Rover has already covered 112 miles. The sailor takes pride in their navigation skills as they head Northeast, crossing through the deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Their destination? Unknown yet, guided by wind and wave.

Navigating the Gulf Stream

With a swift sail, they find themselves in the heart of the Gulf Stream, receiving a powerful boost. This current not only adds more speed but offers a unique experience. The sailor skillfully maneuvers Wave Rover through the Nori Canyon’s abrupt drop-offs and past fishing boats.

Preparation for the Voyage

The preparations for this journey extend from physical supplies to mental readiness. A cooler full of fresh meat, including a generous gift from a local sailor, ensures nutrition. Bottles filled with water, frozen on board, provide fresh drinking water miles away from any shore.

Independence at Sea

The sailor reflects on what sailing alone means to them. Independence, in all forms, is central to this voyage—from carrying all essential tools and clothes to the freedom from societal or governmental constraints while navigating the open ocean.

The Freedom of Exploration

With every mile, the allure of adventure intensifies. The sailor speaks of mental freedom, where the ocean becomes not only a physical boundary but a bridge to untapped potential and personal growth.

A Journey Unfinished

As day turns into night, Wave Rover sails 170 miles offshore. The journey of a solo Atlantic crossing is both daunting and exhilarating. With everything they need on board and their undying spirit to explore, this sailor is ready to face whatever the vast ocean throws at them.

The Final Thoughts

This episode ends with a promise of more stories and experiences. The journey continues as Wave Rover charts its course through the unpredictable yet awe-inspiring Atlantic Ocean, embodying the essence of adventure, independence, and the indomitable human spirit.

Wave Rover has departed Virginia Beach, USA and is en-route to the Port of Horta in the Azores. After 24 hours Wave Rover is 112 nautical miles off shore and riding the Gulf Stream.
