In this enthralling episode, we accompany Wave Rover as he sets sail on an extraordinary solo adventure across the Atlantic Ocean. Armed with his trusty 21ft home-built sailboat, Wave Rover departs from Virginia Beach and embarks on a quest to reach the Azores, a distance of 2,250 nautical miles.
Wave Rover’s journey begins with a gracious and supportive send-off from Virginia Beach, a location that has generously hosted the sailboat and its crew. Friends, family, and supporters bid Wave Rover farewell, as excitement and anticipation build for this momentous undertaking.
The initial leg of the journey is fraught with challenges as Wave Rover navigates through the Virginia Beach area and its surrounding waters. With precise planning and careful execution, Wave Rover manages to pass safely through shallow canals and avoid potentially hazardous situations.
In preparation for the open ocean, Wave Rover meticulously prepares the boat with essential equipment, including a newly constructed wind vane and a series of drogues. These crucial additions ensure that the vessel remains stable and manageable during extreme weather conditions.
A key component of Wave Rover’s preparations is testing the trim tab self steering system. During an earlier leg of the journey, from Summerside to Port Hawkesbury, Wave Rover encounters difficulties with the self steering system, but eventually manages to get it working properly just as he enters the open ocean.
As Wave Rover’s voyage continues and the United States dips below the horizon, the sailboat heads towards its ultimate destination of the Azores. With a challenging first day under its belt, Wave Rover is now firmly committed to the adventure ahead.
This episode marks only the beginning of an epic solo Atlantic Ocean crossing. With determination and skill, Wave Rover will navigate through treacherous waters, conquer challenging weather conditions, and ultimately reach his desired destination. Stay tuned to this exciting series for more thrilling tales from aboard Wave Rover.
After preparing the series drogue and some other last minute details I head off on the 2250 nautical mile passage to the Port of Horta in the Azores. A big shout out to Rick, his wife, and friends for sending me off in style.
