SEASON FINALE !!

🔥 AFTER SITTING FOR AROUND FIVE YEARS… UV IS FINALLY ALIVE!

This is a BIG episode for Sailing UV.

Our 57-foot ketch-rigged project boat finally has her transmission installed, everything is hooked back together, and today we’re doing something we’ve been working toward for a LONG time:

WE’RE STARTING THE ENGINE AND TESTING THAT $7,000 TRANSMISSION! 😳

UV’s Perkins 6.354 diesel has barely run in roughly five years, so I honestly had no idea what was going to happen when we hit that starter.

Would she fire?

Would the transmission actually shift?

Would the prop turn?

Would something start leaking?

Or would this turn into another expensive boat-project disaster?

Well… she RUNS. And the transmission WORKS! 🙌

For the first time since starting this massive refit, UV is technically MOBILE again.

But because this is boat work, naturally that isn't the end of the story.

We discover a coolant leak from the engine water pump, track down a diesel leak, and then there's the biggest problem of all: our old Perkins is smoking WAY more than I want to see.

I spent most of the day trying to get rid of the smoke without much luck, so we're going back to basics. A compression test is coming, and we're going to figure out exactly what this engine needs.

Still, this is a HUGE milestone.

The transmission is installed.
The engine runs.
Forward works.
Reverse works.
UV can move under her own power again.

After everything it took to get here, I'll take that win!

And this episode also marks the end of SEASON ONE of Sailing UV. 💜

We're going to kick off the next chapter with a full tour of UV, followed by a LOT more work as we continue transforming this 57-foot fiberglass tank into the cruising boat that Violet and I hope will eventually take us around the world.
