$7,000, more than a year of waiting, a 100+ lb transmission hanging over the engine room… and we’re FINALLY getting this thing installed in UV. 🔧⛵
Welcome back to Sailing UV!
UV is our 57-foot ketch-rigged fiberglass tank of a sailboat—and one very big project. We’re slowly refitting her from bow to stern with one goal in mind: getting her ready to sail away and eventually begin a circumnavigation.
This week, we’re jumping straight back into one of the biggest projects we’ve tackled yet: finishing the transmission installation.
After getting the transmission into the engine room last episode, I realized it needed to come back out. 🤦♂️ What I thought was the final installation turned into a dry fit after realizing I’d forgotten grease on the splines and needed considerably more room to manipulate the prop shaft.
So… out it came.
And now we’re doing it AGAIN.
Except this time, it’s FULL SEND.
We’re lowering this 100+ lb beast back into the engine room, wrestling it into position, moving a prop shaft that hasn’t spun in YEARS, reconnecting the shaft and bearing, hooking up the transmission cooler, adjusting the shift cable, filling the transmission with fluid, and getting dangerously close to finally starting UV and putting the transmission through its gears.
There’s just one problem…
The farther I moved the prop shaft, the more nervous I got about the seal keeping the ocean on the OUTSIDE of the boat. 😳🌊
Then, after all that work, one crusty old hose clamp brings the entire operation to a halt.
I’m not spinning a prop shaft that hasn’t moved in roughly five years with one questionable clamp standing between us and a potentially VERY bad day.
Boat projects: where a $5 part can stop a $7,000 project dead in its tracks. 😂
It was frustrating. There may have been a small meltdown. But that’s part of this journey too.
We’re building UV one project, one paycheck, one setback, and one victory at a time—and we’re getting closer.
The transmission is IN.
The shaft is connected.
And NEXT EPISODE… we’re starting this boat. 🔥
If you’re enjoying the journey, hit SUBSCRIBE and come along with Violet and me as we turn this 57-foot project boat into the cruising boat we’ve been dreaming about.
