In this video, we continue to work on improving the water resistance and safety of our boat as we rebuild it. Our latest focus is on installing watertight bulkheads throughout the hull, a crucial step in protecting against potential leaks and avoiding catastrophic outcomes.
When we decided to embark on rebuilding our boat, one of the main concerns we had was increasing its overall safety and durability. We realized that many production boats are missing crucial watertight bulkheads in their design.
If your boat hits something or encounters damage to vulnerable areas, like the rudder or Sail Drive, having watertight bulkheads in place can prevent it from sinking. They segment and compartmentalize various sections of your boat, so even if there is a significant leak somewhere, it won’t necessarily compromise the entire vessel.
We learned about the importance of watertight bulkheads firsthand through a harrowing example involving the catamaran, the Arona. After experiencing damage to its rudder post and subsequent water ingress, the boat ultimately sank despite efforts by its crew. The lack of proper watertight bulkheads contributed significantly to this unfortunate outcome.
An even closer example happened while we were working in the shipyard, where we witnessed a Bali catamaran come into port with significant damage to its keel. This reinforced our resolve to ensure that our boat is protected with watertight bulkheads for safer bluewater sailing.
We have made significant progress on this crucial aspect of our rebuild, ensuring the watertight compartments are properly sealed and in place. The next steps will focus on finishing up the AF cabin, working on the main cabin area, and further enhancing the overall safety of our boat.
