Sneak Peak of the next #step

Get a sneak peek at what we have planned next for our sailing catamaran refurbishment project. Today we’re tackling the BSA (beam shelf assembly) on the side deck which is going to hold all our electronics and battery bank, so it’s pretty crucial.

Preparing the Area for Glassing

To prepare for glassing, we make sure that everything is clean and free from dirt or debris. This helps ensure a smooth and blemish-free finish. We also check for any gaps in the area where the BSA will be installed to prevent any air bubbles from forming underneath the glass layers.

The Grinding Process

Once we’re ready, we start grinding the area where the BSA will be installed to create a smooth surface for the glass. It takes time and patience but it’s essential to do it right. While we were doing this, our friends on Another Damn yacht arrived – you should check out their channel if you haven’t already!

Glassing Process

After grinding, it’s time to start glassing. This involves carefully applying multiple layers of fiberglass and resin to create a strong and durable structure. We make sure that each layer is perfectly aligned with the others so there are no gaps or air bubbles.

Challenges Along The Way

We didn’t expect how quickly the resin would start to cure in the hot conditions we were working under, which made things a bit challenging. It meant that we had to work fast before it became too difficult to apply any more layers. But with perseverance and a little luck, we managed to get everything done.

The Final Touches

Once the final layer of resin had cured properly, we could finally say that this part of the project was complete. It felt amazing to see our hard work come together and it was such a satisfying achievement.

Moving Forward

With the BSA now glassed and ready for installation, we’re one step closer to completing our sailing catamaran refurbishment. But there’s still so much more left to do! We’ll keep pushing forward until everything is perfect.

It's time for another weekly episode and this week we're getting messy grinding the interior, ready for glassing in the side deck balsa core. It. Is. Hot! We run into some issues with the resin curing too quickly, but we find a small air conditioner to help. Not even this Italian heat will stop us!
