On a stormy but chill night in the Marlborough Sounds, Sailing Triteia’s James and Kiwi sailor Rhonda anchored their boat in Ketu Bay. Their plan to sail through New Zealand had taken them to this beautiful and remote location.
The magic of the Marlborough Sounds began early as Rhonda joined James in his 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop SV Triteia. They had never met before but were ready to say yes to adventure. Their plans were to explore as much as they could while weather permitting.
James and Rhonda had heard that there was good fishing in Ketu Bay. After a row to shore, they found evidence of fish activity near the shore which prompted them to try their luck at fishing.
With some bait and help from another yacht in the bay, James and Rhonda managed to catch two good-sized gurnard which are delicious for eating. This was perfect timing as they were also eager to try out a new smoker they had brought along.
After some video-guided help on how to clean the fish, James took over the task while Rhonda handled other preparations. The next day, they smoked the gurnard on the beach which turned out to be a fantastic meal with rice and vegetables.
The evening turned into a productive but late night, with the two sailors enjoying their catch and each other’s company. They had a clear view of the clouds rolling in, adding to the beautiful ambiance of the location.
Sailing Triteia’s James and Rhonda enjoyed an unforgettable evening of fishing at Ketu Bay, Marlborough Sounds. The experience was filled with adventure, learning new skills, and enjoying delicious fresh fish smoked on the beach.
