What? We Went Shrimping on our Sailboat?!! | Sailing SV Indigo

In this exhilarating episode, the Sailing SV Indigo crew takes on a unique sailing adventure as they attempt to shrimp from their sailboat for the very first time. Having shrimped before but never from their own boat, the excitement is palpable as they head out to Bainbridge Island’s Manzanita Bay in pursuit of delectable spot prawns.

Planned Shrimping Adventure

The crew carefully planned their shrimping expedition, timing it to coincide with the short four-hour window during which shrimp season opens. Anchoring in Manzanita Bay provided a perfect starting point for their two-day sailing trip.

Navigating Challenges and Securing a Spot

However, the journey was not without its challenges. Navigating through the Egott Pass Bridge proved tricky as they sailed with just two to four knots of wind that kept changing directions. But, their perseverance paid off when they found a suitable spot for shrimping, marked by other boats in close proximity.

Dropping the Trap and Anticipating Success

Armed with knowledge of their 9 a.m. start, the crew dropped their trap at the North End of Bainbridge Island, anticipating a fruitful catch. They were particularly mindful of not tangling with other pots or lines in the area.

A Day Full of Lessons Learned

After waiting for hours, they retrieved their trap. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they returned empty-handed. The challenge lay in efficiently retrieving the trap – trying to pull it up by hand was too tough, and using the winch required constant maneuvering of the boat.

Future Attempts and Takeaways

The crew acknowledges that they need an electric winch for more efficient shrimping, especially on their sailboat. Although the adventure did not yield the desired outcome, they have gained valuable lessons for future attempts. With only a four-hour window to shrimp, they know that their second try must be strategic and well-execposed.

Sailing SV Indigo’s unique adventure in shrimping off their sailboat emphasizes the importance of adapting and learning from each experience. They encourage viewers to comment on the video, sharing insights that could lead to success during their next attempt. Despite the outcome, the crew looks forward to further adventures.
